3 Apr 2004 - Prevention is better than cure

Stroke Awareness: Prevention is better than cure.

On the 3rd of April 2004 two of Northampton's Rotary Clubs, Northampton and Northampton West, combined to distribute Stroke Awareness Leaflets to over 1200 people in the Grosvenor Centre in Northampton on behalf of the Stroke Association. Each year over 100,000 people in England and Wales suffer their first stroke and about 10,000 are under the age of 55. The Rotary Clubs hoped by increasing the awareness they might prevent a stroke, which is the largest single cause of severe disability in the country. The Rotary Clubs in Northampton support many Charities and Organisations. On the same day Northampton West Rotary Club also raised £ 182 for the Cynthia Spencer Hospice and Drugs Awareness.

There are a number of simple actions we can take to lower blood pressure and prevent a stroke. These include: -
 Stop Smoking
 Loose excess weight
 Stick to recommended alcohol limits
 Avoid binge drinking
 Eat a healthy diet low in saturated fat and high in fibre.
 Reduce your salt intake
 Take regular exercise.

All four Northampton Rotary Clubs are combining later this year to fund raise again for Cynthia Spencer and to celebrate 100 years of the Rotary Foundation. This major event will be Dragon Boat Racing in Northampton on Sunday 25th July 2004. Please come and support us.
